Our Classes

Advanced Reading/Writing Club

 

This class is for students who are passionate about reading and writing.  Students will have opportunites to read and discuss the latest YA literature as well as explore many creative writing topics and ideas.  In the past students have evaluated and participated in the purchasing of new materials  for our school library and classrooms.  Students also typically participate in National Novel Writing Month, and many other creative writing competitions and expos.  Please contact Ms. Rose (jodee.rose@bvsd.org) for more information.

Algebra/Geometry Academic Support

 

This class is for students enrolled in Compacted 7th/8th Grade Math, Algebra, or Geometry (M24/M31/M35/M43) who need extra support in order to excel at a high level in these advanced classes.  Students are expected to attend daily and lessons will focus on pre-teaching and re-teaching current topics as well support for homework and test preparation.  Please contact Mr. Rosin (chad.rosin@bvsd.org) for more information.

Pre-AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

 

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap and prepare all students for success in the global economy.  This pre-AVID class focuses on organization and self advocacy skills and gives students a taste of what the AVID elective class is like during the traditional school day.  6th, 7th and 8th graders are welcome to participate in this class and are expected to attend daily.  Please contact Ms. Barcheck (elizabeth.barcheck@bvsd.org) for more information.

Literacy in Film

 

This course traces the origin and development of American Cinema over the past century.   With an emphasis on the 20th century, students will study the historical background of major events and movements in America while viewing and critiquing relevant Hollywood films from a variety of time periods. Students will analyze these films as works of art, primary sources for historical inquiry, and learn the history of American filmmaking.  Daily attendance is required, and all students are invited to participate.  Please contact Mr. Slaby (scott.slaby@bvsd.org) for more information.

Spanish 2

 

Spanish 2 will not be available during the traditonal school day.  All eligible stundets will need to enroll and participate in the morning excel block.  The Spanish 2 curriculum covers speaking, reading, writing, and listening and is appropriate for students who have successfully completed Spanish 1B, or who have previous Spanish language experience.

PE/Health

 

This class is for students who are unable to take PE during the traditional school day because of their partiicpation in academic elexctives or support classes.  Two thirds of the year will cover the district PE curriculum and one third will cover the Health curriculum.  Enrollment is based on availablity of desired classes and students are expected to attend every day.  This course is graded and included on a student's transcript.  Please contact Mr. Juroshek (john.juroshek@bvsd.org) for more information.

Reading Plus

 

This class is for students who need extra support in Reading.  Students will be invited to participate based on their TCAP scores and reading needs as demonstrated in Language Arts classes.  Reading Plus students who opt to take this class in the morning will not need to enroll in Reading Plus during the traditional school day, and will be able to take an elective class.  Daily attendance is required and students will receive a grade for this class.  Please contact Ms. Weir (megan.weir@bvsd.org) for more information.

8th Grade Math Academic Support

 

This class is for students enrolled in M25 who need extra support in order to achieve at grade level.  Students are expected to attend daily and lessons will focus on pre-teaching and re-teaching current topics as well as basic skill work.  Please contact Mr. Peters (larry.peters@bvsd.org) for more information.

Blended Learning Intervention

 

    This class is for students who are currently working with a blended learning opportunity like Mobi Max, Raz Kids, Lexia, or iReady.  Students will be invited to participate in this class, which may allow them space in their traditional schedule for an elective class.  This class will be taught collaboratively by Ms. Omori Jones and Ms. Miller.  For more information, please email Ms. Omori Jones (lisa.omori@bvsd.org) or Ms. Miller (aryn.miller@bvsd.org).

YMCA Homework Help

 

    This program will be run collaboratively bewteen the YMCA and Angevine Staff.  Students will have the opportunityto work on HW, projects, studying for tests and exams, and well as access to computers and materials in the library.  This is a great opportunity, to catch up, stay on track, or get ahead on school work and learning tasks.  Participants in YMCA homework help will also receive support for organization and study techniques helpful for middle school success.  For more information please email Mr. Lowe (mike.lowe@bvsd.org).
